Historical Explanation: David Hume was a Scottish Enlightenment philosopher during the 18th century CE. The thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment asserted the importance of human reason combined with a rejection of any authority that could not be justified by reason (i.e. authoritarian governments).

Metaphysical Implication: Hume is saying that if there is such a thing as freedom, then there must be room for refusal to obey a command. And if there is room for a refusal to obey a command, then there is independence of committing good or evil (i.e. the Forbidden Fruit in the Garden of Eden).

Practical Application: Knowing that we have the free will to live our lives, we then have the choice to do good or bad. Which also means, as students, we also have the choice to procrastinate. Therefore, we can either make one definite move toward our daily goal or we can spend time thinking about it, never getting it done.
