Tallahassee Community College’s production of “Spring Awakening” is quickly approaching and TCC’s Director of Theatre, Eva Nielsen, is directing.

“Spring Awakening” is a musical based on the play of the same name written by German playwright Frank Wedekind. Now set to a rock music score, with lyrics by Duncan Sheik and music by Steven Sater, the Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of teenagers exploring their sexuality in conservative Germany during the late 19th century.

Director Eva Nielsen shares why she finds the show impactful, and what she hopes audiences can take away from it.

“Oh, it is the kind of show that has everything. And I think what drew me to it is that it’s personal, it presents different modes, styles of presentation. And there’s high drama, high comedy, fantastic characters, and an absolutely beautiful score and lyrics as well,” said Nielsen.

“So I think it’s just to kind of show that has everything. And granted it is an edgy musical, but it has a really strong message as well. So it’s not just there for shock value.”

The musical’s “edgy” reputation and popularity among young adults, has often come from its exploration of mature themes including sexuality, religion, abuse, and mental illness.

Nielsen finds that even over 10 years after its’ Broadway debut in 2006 Spring Awakening is even more important than when it took Broadway by storm. Nielsen said that even though the play itself was written 127 years ago the themes are still just as relevant.

“The issues in focus are things children and teenagers still deal with today — not having access to sex education, or not having someone to turn to; abortion; suicide; sexual and physical abuse,” said Nielsen.

Nielsen believes that students will identify themselves with characters within the show, and hopes that adults watching the show will understand why it’s important to listen to their children.

“Truly, the notion of listening to our children is one that transcends all time periods.”

For mature themes, “Spring Awakening” is recommended for ages 16 plus.

“Spring Awakening” opens 8 pm Thursday, April 4 and runs through the weekend of the 6, it returns April 12 and 13 with performances at 8 p.m., and a matinee performance on Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. Admission is free for TCC students with a valid ID.
