Sophie Mills is a first-year non-binary Tallahassee Community College student who is an artist, writer, and photographer. They received their artistic inspiration from their grandmother.

“My grandmother actually was the first professor hired at TCC,” said Mills. “She was an art professor and so I just kind of grew up with a lot of art books around.”

Mills balances academics by taking classes that focus on their creative interests: art, writing, and photography.

“Now I’m in beginner illustration,” said Mills. “My professor is really nice and really nurturing to what I say I want to do with my art and is really helpful in putting me in the right direction.”

Not only does Mills love writing and art, but they believe it is something others could use to keep their mind healthy.

“I think it’s been very helpful for my mental health, especially because I feel like a lot of people struggle with their mental state right now and an artistic outlet is helpful.”

Mills is planning to transfer to Florida State University and pursue a career in writing while still working on art.

“I’m looking for jobs in the editing and publishing field because a lot of the writers I respect took that career path.”
