Elijah Moran | Opinion Piece

We all hear stories about how Americans bonded together following the attacks on September 11, 2001. We united, and we knew America would bounce back stronger than ever. Old Glory was draped across the country, and Wrigley Field erupted as Sammy Sosa ran full speed onto the diamond waving an American flag. President Bush threw the perfect first pitch just miles away from Ground Zero at Yankee Stadium. Churches, temples, and synagogues were full the Sunday after to pray for the nation.

America is different today. We only unite seasonally, unfortunately: every year for the fourth of July, 9/11, and every other year for the Olympics.

Due to the current political climate in the country, on top of the division surrounding multiple areas of our society, if ANYTHING like 9/11 ever happened again, we wouldn’t unite as we did twenty years ago.

As soon as disaster would strike, both political parties would immediately begin spewing their opinions on how it could’ve happened and conspiring on who could’ve been behind it.

Could we come truly unite again? That’s hard to say. It’d take Americans throwing their political alliances aside. It’d take people’s beliefs about other religions chucked out the window, and grudges with others to be forgotten.

What do you think it would take for America to unite again?
