Tallahassee Community College is paying off close to $5.9 million of student debt with pandemic relief money from the federal government.
Close to one-third of TCC students qualify for this funding. TCC administrators hope this assistance will remove financial obstacles encountered by low-income students, according to WCTV.
Dr. Barbara Wills, TCC vice president for administrative services and chief business officer, said students who don’t have outstanding charges are not eligible to receive this funding but if a student needs assistance they should apply. These emergency funds can be used for food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child care.
Dr. Wills said the student expenses paid off by TCC will vary based on the amount of outstanding charges.
“TCC is very happy to use our Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds to support our students. These funds are available to help students with outstanding debt,” Dr. Wills said. “Having debt can have long-term negative consequences; eliminating debt provides a brighter future for our students.”
